HVAC Companies Facing Technician Shortage; HGTC Bridging the Gap
New evening classes in Georgetown expand training opportunities
(CONWAY, SC) July 27, 2018 - Heating and cooling companies in Horry and Georgetown counties need more trained service technicians, and Horry-Georgetown Technical College is working to meet that demand. HGTC offers both day and evening classes for its residential HVAC service technician program on its Conway campus, and this fall it will begin offering evening classes on its Georgetown Campus.
The certificate program takes two semesters for daytime track students and four semesters for evening track students. Graduates are prepared for jobs as HVAC installers or mechanics, refrigeration installers or mechanics, HVAC technician supervisors, or HVAC systems sales representatives. The average annual salary for an HVAC service technician in the Myrtle Beach market is $38,200.
For companies like Mancill, the need goes beyond HVAC.
“HVAC technicians have been extremely hard to come by, but now we are seeing the same effects in electrical and plumbing as well,” says Mancill SVP Jimmie Cummins. “Experienced help is becoming harder and harder to find. We could always use more technicians for electrical, plumbing, and HVAC.”
HGTC graduated 36 HVAC service technicians in the 2017-2018 academic year and is already on track to increase that number this year. The college also offers certificate programs in electrical technician and service plumbing.
