Addiction & Recovery Series

Horry-Georgetown Technical College

The HGTC Addiction & Recovery Series

The Addiction & Recovery lecture series was created in 2008 by Physics Professor Casey King to change the face of recovery and reduce the stigma our society places on those in recovery.

The goals of the Addiction & Recovery lecture series are to:

  • Increase public awareness of recovery in our community,
  • Educate the public on the biology and psychological basis that drives many addictions,
  • Demonstrate that addiction crosses all social and economic boundaries,
  • Reduce the stigma our culture assigns to those in recovery and
  • To demonstrate that recovery from addictions is possible through a multitude of methods and can be free to those who want it.

Actor and comedian Tom Arnold has had a well-publicized journey with addiction and child sexual abuse. Arnold’s drinking and substance use began years before he left the Midwest, where he was born and raised and where his sister became one of the most prominent drug dealers. Tom honestly shares the ups and downs of his recovery with us.

Arnold says rehabilitation is an ongoing process. He has been attending 12-step meetings for 35 years and is sober. “It is something I work on every day,” he said.

Kevin McCauley, MD

This lecture serves as a primer on current addiction neuroscience with information that validates the lived experiences of people with addiction. Criticisms of the brain are addressed in that it does not adequately address the social and ecological factors that are crucial to any complete understanding of addiction and recovery.

The lecture then goes beyond the brain to explore the role of the body and environmental affordances in choice-making and addiction, describing an enactivist approach known as “4E cognition.” Focusing on recent developments in psychoneuroimmunology, computational psychiatry, and embodied consciousness, this “4E” approach answers many of the criticisms of the brain disease model of addiction.
