Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act
Horry-Georgetown Technical College received additional stimulus funds from the federal government as a result of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to assist students in need during the pandemic. The CARES Act provides emergency stimulus funds to students for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus (including eligible expenses under a student’s cost of attendance such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child care).
Horry-Georgetown Technical College received $2,579,294 in CARES Act funds designated for students from the U. S. Department of Education.
The initial awards were made to students who were enrolled the Spring Semester as a credit student on March 13, 2020.
The legislation differentiates between students that are eligible for Pell grants and students that are not eligible for Pell grants. Thus the amount awarded to students depended on whether you were Pell-eligible based on Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from the 2019-20 FAFSA for the 2020 Spring Semester.
The college produced a report of all spring term students enrolled as of March 15, 2020 who were Title IV eligible and not enrolled in an exclusively online program. Based on the funding available, the college made the decision to award $1,000 to students in the 0 – 5576 EFC range, and $450 to students in the EFC range of 5577 – 999999 who had met all other Title IV eligible requirements.
