Golf and Sports Turf Management
Golf is wildly popular and Myrtle Beach is the place to be if you love this exciting sport! If you're interested in a career in this fast-growing industry, you should check out HGTC's Golf and Sports Turf Management associate degree program, the only associate degree program of its kind in South Carolina. Graduates of the Golf & Sports Turf Management emphasis program are qualified for employment as course superintendent, assistant superintendent, grounds managers or foreman. Other employment areas include turf management, sod production, park management, landscape management and turf products sales positions.

Mission/Purpose Statement:
The mission of the golf and sports turf management program is to offer a strong academic and applications-based program necessary to produce well-educated graduates who become innovative and productive members of society. Students will possess both the problem-solving skills and the fundamental soft skills needed in the modern workplace. Students will be prepared in the areas of plant science, soils, pest management, irrigation, grounds management, fiscal and organizational management.
Goals:
- Become engaged and competent golf and sports turf management professionals by applying
technical and managerial skills needed for planning, design, construction, operation,
or maintenance of golf courses, athletic fields or other turfgrass facilities, using
their skills to analyze, design, maintain, and build turfgrass systems, specify appropriate
methods and materials, perform cost estimates and analyses, and manage technical activities
in support of golf and sports turf management activities.
- Cultivate students’ communication skills in oral, written, visual and graphic modes
when working as team members or leaders, so they can actively participate in their
communities and their profession.
- Established an understanding of professionalism, ethics, quality performance, safety, and sustainability that allows them to be professional leaders and contributors to society when solving agronomic challenges while producing golf and sports turf management solutions.
