Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) proudly joined the City of Myrtle Beach in honoring Colonel Thomas “Buddy” Styers with the dedication of the Colonel Thomas “Buddy” Styers Athletic Complex at Grand Park. This recognition celebrates his extraordinary leadership and lasting contributions to the transformation of the Myrtle Beach community.
As the driving force behind the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base Redevelopment Authority, Colonel Styers played a pivotal role in reshaping the former base into the thriving Market Common district. His vision laid the foundation for housing, recreation, infrastructure, and one of South Carolina’s premier educational institutions—the HGTC Grand Strand Campus at Market Common.
HGTC President, Dr. Marilyn “Murph” Fore spoke at the dedication ceremony, expressing the College’s deep appreciation for Colonel Styers’ impact. “Buddy, you have made this place one that we love. Forever, your namesake will remind us of your dedication to this community,” President Fore shared.
Colonel Styers’ unwavering commitment to creating a beautiful, livable, and family-friendly environment is reflected not only in Market Common but also in the success of HGTC’s Grand Strand Campus. His work ensured that education, workforce development, and opportunity remain at the heart of this revitalized area, solidifying HGTC’s place as a cornerstone of the community.
“Without Buddy’s vision, this space may not hold the meaning it does today,” added President Fore. “He has touched everything from above-the-ground development to underground utilities, and because of him, people of all ages can enjoy this remarkable place.”
The Colonel Thomas “Buddy” Styers Athletic Complex will serve as a lasting testament to his dedication, continuing to bring people together through sports, recreation, and community spirit.
