HGTC Annual Addiction & Recovery Lecture Series: Event Schedule Announced

Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) is excited to announce the 18th Annual Addiction & Recovery Lecture Series, an impactful event dedicated to raising awareness and fostering meaningful conversations around addiction and recovery. These free events, held from 7-9 p.m. each Thursday in February, will take place at the HGTC Burroughs and Chapin Auditorium on the Conway Campus. A catered dinner will be available in Building 1100B, Room 301, from 6-7 p.m.

The 2025 series features expert speakers who will address critical topics within addiction recovery, offering a unique opportunity for the community to learn, reflect, and engage. All events are free and open to the public with no registration required.

2025 Lecture Series Schedule:

Thursday, February 13: Andrew Zimmern
Andrew Zimmern, the Emmy-winning and four-time James Beard Award-winning TV personality, chef, writer, and passionate global citizen, will share his journey and commitment to recovery. Known for creating and hosting the Bizarre Foods franchise, Zimmern has been sober since 1992 and actively supports several recovery organizations. He will discuss how food can promote cultural understanding, acceptance, and personal healing.

Thursday, February 20: Dr. Kevin McCauley
Dr. Kevin McCauley will present on the neurobiology of behavioral addictions, focusing on Problematic Use of the Internet (PUI), including online gambling, gaming, and compulsive sexual behavior disorders. This presentation will explore the similarities and differences between behavioral addictions and substance use disorders, risk factors, brain changes, and offer practical advice for mental health providers and parents working with at-risk youth.

Thursday, February 27: Professor Casey King
Casey King, series organizer and professor, will provide a look back at the remarkable 17 years of the Addiction & Recovery Lecture Series. He will close the series with a personal account of his own journey through addiction and recovery.
