The first-ever Teal & Tech Experience, a partnership between Coastal Carolina University and Horry-Georgetown Technical College, will introduce more than 350 Myrtle Beach Middle School eighth grade students to the educational opportunities available at both institutions. The daylong event will be held on both campuses on Tuesday, April 9. The goal for CCU and HGTC is to provide the same opportunity to every middle school within Horry County Schools.
“The Teal & Tech Experience promises to be a wonderful opportunity for Myrtle Beach Middle School students to explore the ample educational programs that are offered at two local institutions, which also happen to be great neighbors,” said CCU President Michael T. Benson. “We are delighted to collaborate with HGTC in launching this innovative pilot program. Eighth grade marks a pivotal time to inspire young minds toward higher education, and it’s never too early to show these students what post-high school educational opportunities are available right here in Horry County.”
During the event – the brainchild of CCU first lady Debi Benson – more than 20 CCU students will serve as volunteer group leaders, which will give them the opportunity to meet the middle school students and escort them through the day’s various activities.
“So many people have pitched in to make this educational day possible,” said Debi Benson, “and we can’t wait to showcase all that both CCU and HGTC have to offer.”
The Teal & Tech Experience begins at 10 a.m. with a welcome assembly in CCU’s Wheelwright Auditorium, which will be followed by exploration of the academic programs and facilities of both campuses. In addition to enjoying lunch in CCU’s Hicks Dining Hall, the students will conclude the day by taking a class photo on the teal turf of Brooks Stadium at approximately 4 p.m. The students will be greeted on the field by the mascots from both institutions as well as CCU’s student-athletes, dance team, and the Chanticleer Regiment. A copy of the photo will be provided to each student when they graduate from Myrtle Beach Middle School at the end of the academic year.
“As we eagerly anticipate the upcoming Teal & Tech Experience event, Horry-Georgetown Technical College is thrilled to partner with Coastal Carolina University in providing an immersive and enriching experience for the students of Myrtle Beach Middle School,” said HGTC President Marilyn Murphy Fore, Ed.D. “This collaboration underscores our commitment to fostering educational opportunities and inspiring the next generation of the workforce. This ‘day in the life’ style event, highlighting the Gator experience, will offer students a firsthand glimpse into the diverse programs and opportunities available at HGTC. Through engaging presentations and demonstrations, we aim to ignite curiosity and passion for careers while showcasing the unique pathways our College offers. We are proud to join forces with Coastal Carolina University in this endeavor and look forward to welcoming the students for a day filled with discovery, exploration, and inspiration.”
