Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC), is pleased to announce The National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) has generously donated $10,000 to the HGTC Foundation, specifically designated for the Respiratory Care Program. This donation is part of a broader initiative by the NBRC to support over 450 Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC)-accredited respiratory care educational programs across the nation.
The funds will be used to provide scholarships for current and future respiratory care practitioners enrolled at HGTC. The scholarships are available to students who are pursuing a course of study in Respiratory Care or Respiratory Therapy, maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.0, and enrolled either full-time or part-time. Unlike many scholarships, this one does not require proof of financial need, allowing a wider range of students to qualify and benefit from the opportunity.
“We are deeply grateful to The National Board for Respiratory Care for their generous support,” said Dr. Marilyn Murphy Fore at HGTC. “This funding will directly benefit our students, providing them with financial support and resources that will help them succeed in their studies and future careers in respiratory care.”
The Respiratory Care Department at HGTC has the flexibility to determine the number and dollar amount of the scholarships awarded, provided the total does not exceed $10,000. Scholarships must be distributed by the end of the 2025 calendar year. Beyond direct scholarships, the funds can also be utilized for various other purposes, such as purchasing Self-Assessment Examinations, providing vouchers for examination fees, supporting activities for student recruitment or retention, participating in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) activities, and purchasing course textbooks.
The National Board for Respiratory Care's mission is to promote excellence in respiratory care by awarding credentials based on high competency standards, with a shared goal of protecting and enhancing patient lives.
"We are thrilled and deeply appreciative of The National Board for Respiratory Care's generous donation to our program,” said Sheri Tanner, HGTC Assistant Chair and Program Director of Respiratory Care. "This funding will significantly enhance our ability to support our students in their educational journey, whether through scholarships, examination preparation, or other resources. Our goal is to prepare highly skilled respiratory care professionals who are ready to provide exceptional care to their patients, and this donation helps us to further that mission.”
The HGTC Respiratory Care Program is dedicated to preparing graduates who demonstrate competence in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains of respiratory care practice as performed by registered respiratory therapists (RRTs). Respiratory Therapists play a critical role in caring for patients with heart and lung ailments. At HGTC, students receive training using the most up-to-date technology and equipment, ensuring they are well-prepared for employment in the field. Students in the HGTC program gain valuable experience and understand the significant role in today's healthcare system, providing essential care to high-risk patients during their most critical moments.
