Stand Down for Homeless Veterans Event 2024

Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) is proud to support and participate in the Stand Down for Homeless Veterans event hosted by The Veterans Welcome Home and Resource Center (VWHRC) on Friday, October 18, 2024. The event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Myrtle Beach Outpatient Clinic location, 1800 Airpark Drive, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.

The Stand Down for Veterans event is designed to provide essential services to veterans, particularly those who are homeless, and is part of a nationwide initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). HGTC is committed to being a part of this important event by providing vital health services through the College's Dental and EMT programs, as well as offering workforce development information.

At the event, HGTC will host a table where attendees can learn about educational and career opportunities available through the College’s workforce development efforts. HGTC dental students, supervised by a licensed dentist, will perform basic dental screenings and provide referrals for ongoing dental care. In addition, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) students will assist VA personnel with vital signs, check-in, and medical history assessments, ensuring that veterans receive thorough health evaluations.

Dr. Marilyn Fore, President of HGTC, emphasized the importance of community involvement for students and the College alike, “At HGTC, we believe that community service ignites a spark of compassion and responsibility in our students, and this event is a shining example of how they can give back to those who have served our country. Supporting veterans not only aligns with our College’s mission but also enriches the lives of our students through hands-on experience and service.”

This initiative also allows HGTC’s Health Sciences division to meet its program promotion and community service objectives, highlighting the College’s commitment to giving back to the community while providing essential care to those who need it most.

The Veterans Welcome Home and Resource Center’s mission is to end veteran homelessness by assisting local honorably discharged veterans with job placement, filing claims with the VA, helping those facing financial difficulties, and providing temporary shelter to homeless veterans until permanent housing can be secured.
