Dr. Dan Wysong, HGTC Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean
Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) proudly recognizes Dr. Daniel C. Wysong for four decades of dedicated service to the institution. Dr. Wysong's remarkable journey at HGTC began in September 1983 when he joined as the Chair of the Criminal Justice Department. His impact on the College and the field of criminal justice has been nothing short of extraordinary.
A seasoned law enforcement professional, Dr. Wysong served with distinction in the U.S. Air Force and the Gulfport Police Department, where he held various roles, including patrol officer, patrol supervisor, traffic officer, and detective. His wealth of practical experience laid the foundation for his influential career in education.
Throughout his tenure at HGTC, Dr. Wysong has worn many hats, serving as a faculty member, Academic Dean, Associate Vice President, and currently as the Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs/Dean. His contributions extend beyond administrative roles, as he played a pivotal role in the development of key programs that have shaped the College's academic landscape.
In 1986, Dr. Wysong pioneered the Paralegal certificate, followed by the establishment of the Associate Degree in Legal Studies (Paralegal) in 2001. His visionary leadership led to the creation of the Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) program, with Dr. Wysong personally writing and securing approval for most of the CSI courses from the South Carolina Technical College System.
One of his notable achievements came in 2009 when Dr. Wysong inaugurated a state-of-the-art CSI Lab, providing students with a hands-on experience of forensic processes and procedures used in criminal investigations. His commitment to practical training also led to the establishment of the Police Pre-Academy Training (PPAT), a statewide initiative in collaboration with the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
Dr. Wysong's dedication to advancing law enforcement education is evident in the 360-degree tactical training shooting simulator, a unique facility in South Carolina that he established. This simulator allows participants, including students and law enforcement officers, to immerse themselves in live-action scenarios and situations.
In collaboration with local law enforcement agencies, Dr. Wysong instituted a Correctional Officer Training Program to prepare students for roles in local detention centers. His emphasis on fostering strong relationships with the criminal justice community reflects his commitment to providing education, training, and unwavering support. Dr. Wysong is a highly educated professional holding multiple degrees, including a Master’s Degree (MS) in Criminal Justice, a Specialist (EdS) in Adult Education/Criminal Justice, and two PhDs—one in Higher Education Administration and another in Human Services – Criminal Justice.
Reflecting on his distinguished career, Dr. Wysong shared, "My time at HGTC has been incredibly fulfilling, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the growth and success of our students. It has been a privilege to work with an institution that values education and community engagement."

Dr. Wysong, a resident of Conway, has been married to his wife Melanie for over 43 years and is a proud father of two sons and grandfather to two grandchildren.
