Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) is proud to announce that its employees, under the leadership of the Academic and Workforce Development Division, raised an impressive $1,260 for the Leukemia Research Foundation (LRF) during the semi-annual Blue Jeans Week Fundraiser held from September 23–27, 2024. This initiative, which allows participants to wear jeans for a donation of $5 per day or $20 for the entire week, was created to foster community engagement and support important causes like leukemia research.

This year’s event had a special significance for the HGTC family. A few years ago, LRF played a crucial role in supporting one of HGTC’s own, Jill Glasser, during her personal battle with leukemia. The assistance provided to Jill and her family was instrumental in her journey, and this year, the HGTC community came together to give back.

Reflecting on her experience, Glasser shared, "LRF provided me with information and support while I battled leukemia. I had access to the latest in treatment and clinical trial data, which helped me in my fight. I am an active member of their patient advocate committee, which supports worldwide trials, research, and information for those who have experienced the trauma of a leukemia diagnosis. This organization helped me in many ways, and I am honored that HGTC has chosen them for the Blue Jeans Week charity. Thank you to my HGTC family for all the support and love I feel daily. I am so blessed to be a part of this wonderful family.”

The funds raised will support LRF’s mission to cure leukemia by funding innovative research and providing vital assistance to patients and families during their cancer journey. In the U.S. alone, over 62,000 people will be diagnosed with leukemia this year, with more than 23,000 losing their battle to this devastating disease.

HGTC President, Dr. Marilyn Murphy Fore, commended HGTC employees for their incredible efforts, “I am continually amazed by the generosity and compassion of our faculty and staff. This fundraiser exemplifies the heart and spirit of HGTC. By coming together in support of the Leukemia Research Foundation, we’re not just raising money, we’re giving hope to countless families. Our employees are making a real difference, and I couldn’t be prouder of our HGTC community.”

HGTC’s Blue Jeans Week Fundraiser is held twice a year, with each event benefitting a charitable organization that has made an impact on the lives of employees or students. For Fall 2024, the focus was on leukemia, a cause close to the hearts of many at HGTC.
