Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) is proud to present the results of a recent exclusive dinner event hosted at the International Culinary Institute of Myrtle Beach (ICI). Chef James Porter, an award-winning chef and business owner from TERRA Manor & Farm in Prescott, Arizona, visited the HGTC Grand Strand Campus and worked with students and faculty.
In addition, an exclusive dinner event was hosted by instructors and students successfully raising $11,360 for culinary students to participate in the Study Abroad program. The funds will directly support culinary students’ international experiences, allowing them to explore diverse cuisines, cultures, and culinary techniques.
“We are thrilled by the overwhelming support from our community,” said Joseph Bonaparte, HGTC Executive Director of the International Culinary Institute of Myrtle Beach. “These funds will enable our students to participate in enriching study abroad opportunities, enhancing their culinary education. Right now, we are planning trips to Vienna, Austria, France, and Italy for the 2024-2025 academic year.”
The event, hosted on Thursday, June 13 presented a unique opportunity to experience Chef Porter’s exceptional culinary talents and his dedication to sustainable and locally sourced ingredients. Local businesses, alumni, and community members generously contributed to the cause. The Study Abroad program aims to broaden students’ horizons, foster cross-cultural understanding, and provide hands-on learning experiences. Participants have the chance to work alongside renowned chefs, visit local markets, and immerse themselves in global culinary traditions.
"We were thrilled to host Chef James Porter on our campus for an exceptional event. His culinary achievements and commitment to local businesses and sustainability served as an inspiration for our students and community. The evening not only celebrated his culinary artistry but also provided crucial support for our Study Abroad Club, promoting global learning and cultural exchange,” said Dr. Marilyn Murphy Fore, HGTC President.
