Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) proudly announces its support and hospitality sponsorship with the Myrtle Beach Classic, scheduled for May 9-12, 2024, at the prestigious Dunes Golf & Beach Club.
As HGTC students, faculty, and graduates immerse themselves as volunteers in every aspect of the tournament, they embody the spirit of collaboration and innovation that defines both the College and the Myrtle Beach Classic. Together, this partnership is paving the way for a new era of excellence in golf and education.
President of Horry-Georgetown Technical College, Dr. Marilyn Murphy Fore, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "HGTC is thrilled to partner with the organizers of the Myrtle Beach Classic. This event not only highlights the excellence of our community but also provides invaluable opportunities for our students to engage in real-world experiences within the golf industry right here at home."
Echoing Dr. Fore's sentiments, President & CEO of the HGTC Foundation, Shannon Detzler, added, "The Myrtle Beach Classic represents more than just a golf tournament; it symbolizes community pride and collaboration. We are proud to support this historic event and contribute to its success."
HGTC's involvement in the Myrtle Beach Classic extends beyond sponsorship. The College has identified four primary areas of partnership through golf course maintenance, community engagement, turfgrass program involvement, and industry networking.
HGTC students are actively engaged in preparing the Dunes Golf & Beach Club for the tournament. Under the guidance of the Dunes Golf & Beach Club Director of Agronomy and Facilities, Steve Hamilton, and Golf Course Superintendent and HGTC alum, Josh Taylor, students are integral in providing essential agronomic support. Their dedication ensures that the course meets the stringent standards set by the PGA TOUR.
This partnership extends beyond the greens, reaching into the heart of the community. HGTC students and faculty contribute to the tournament's success, fostering a sense of pride and unity among residents.
HGTC's renowned Turfgrass program takes center stage as students gain hands-on experience at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club. From course maintenance to tournament logistics, students immerse themselves in every aspect of event preparation.
The Myrtle Beach Classic serves as a networking hub for HGTC students, providing invaluable connections within the golf industry. With alumni and current students working side by side, this event offers unparalleled opportunities for professional growth and mentorship.
"We are excited to support the Dunes Golf and Beach Club with a tournament in our area," exclaimed Charles Granger, HGTC Chair and Professor of Golf and Sports Turf Management. “This partnership is not merely a sponsorship; it's a seven-day commitment to excellence. HGTC representatives, including past and current students, will work tirelessly to ensure the success of the event, demonstrating their dedication to both education and community involvement.
"HGTC has been an integral part of our community for decades, and their involvement in the Myrtle Beach Classic further strengthens our partnership," said Josh Taylor, Dunes Golf & Beach Club Golf Course Superintendent and HGTC alum.
Myrtle Beach has long been known as the “Golf Capital of the World.” The Myrtle Beach Classic solidifies this claim combining the world-renowned accolades and success as America’s favorite traveling golf destination, with the prestige of hosting a golf event on the world’s top professional golf tour - The PGA TOUR.
