Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) is proud of Aysia Walton, a former student awarded Best Conference Paper by Sigma Kappa Delta (SKD) at the Sigma Tau Delta Conference 2023 in Denver, Colorado.
“The writing contest was open to all Sigma Kappa Delta students across the country, and one of ours took home the top prize,” said Michael Kane, HGTC Professor of English and coordinator for Sigma Kappa Delta.
The convention is for both Sigma Kappa Delta and Sigma Tau Delta (the university level English honor society). Submission deadlines were in November 2022.
Walton was an HGTC student when she submitted the winning piece in the fall of 2022 under Sigma Kappa Delta before starting at Coastal Carolina University (CCU) in the spring. Her writing was submitted in the creative nonfiction/personal essay category. She is currently pursuing a degree in English at CCU with hopes of focusing in comprehension, rhetoric, and linguistics.
“As a former student of mine in English 101, it is great to see her pursuing a degree in English and that her writing is getting recognized on a national scale,” continued Kane. Walton also studied English 102 under another HGTC Professor of English, Carl Beckham. She attributes a lot of the writing studies at HGTC with helping her pursue a degree in English.
