English Professor Publishes Best Seller
Dr. Michael Roberts, HGTC Professor of English.
Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) is proud to announce that Dr. Michael Roberts, HGTC Professor of English, has published his fifth book of poetry by Poet’s Choice Publishing titled The Sounds a Shadow Makes.
Dr. Roberts’ latest work is currently sitting at number nine (#9) on the Amazon Best Sellers list of poetry collections. The Sounds a Shadow Makes is a collection of poems intended to “capture the hidden.” The poems bring a voice to the inner thoughts, restrained emotions, quiet fears, and restrained ideas that exist on the fringes and margins of our everyday experiences.
“This collection brings attention to the individual and the way a person experiences life that is unique and distinct from all others. The main theme presented in this collection is that things that may not be immediately perceptible to our conscience have meaning that is just as real as the observable,” explained Dr. Michael Roberts, HGTC English Professor.
The royalties from the sales of The Sounds a Shadow Makes will be contributed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The book is available for purchase at Poet’s Choice Books and Amazon.
Dr. Roberts has taught at the college level for over 20 years. He joined HGTC in 2016 and has served as a Professor of English for the past seven (7) years. He earned his Doctoral Degree from NC State University, Master of Arts degree from UNC Pembroke, and Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Andrews University.
After years of teaching college and university literature courses, such as Introduction to Literature and Literary Criticism, Dr. Roberts began publishing original poetry in 2020. Scribbled Lines: Life in Pieces is his first full collection of poetry. He has published two chapbook collections entitled Random Roadside Cemetery and Daughters, Soulmates, and the Spirit in the Urn. He has also published research books and articles on education and curriculum development. His poetry style is often described as a complex blend of "bookmarking life" and social criticism. He states that his literary influences are E.E. Cummings and Modernist authors.
Dr. Roberts is the father of two daughters, Cayce and Kathryn, whom he cites as the original inspirations for his creative writing.
