HGTC and SC Works Present Be Pro Be Proud South Carolina
South Carolina’s Mobile Workshop makes stop at HGTC for Events and Job Fairs that encourage students to explore in-demand skilled professions.
Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) and SC Works announced a partnership today that will bring the Be Pro Be Proud South Carolina initiative to Horry and Georgetown counties this month. HGTC and SC Works are proud to present this unique opportunity to tour the impressive Be Pro Be Proud Mobile Virtual Workshop. The 53-foot, double expandable, 18-wheeler will be located on HGTC Campuses February 23-25, 2021 as a way to encourage the community to consider high-wage, skilled trade professions.
“South Carolina’s workforce is facing a challenge with more than 24% of current skilled professionals at or near retirement age. That indicates future industry stability for the next generation,” said HGTC President, Dr. Marilyn Murphy Fore. “We are hoping this educational tour will inspire students to get excited about being the state’s workforce. The future looks bright for those ready to fill the gap.”
There’s never been a better time to explore South Carolina’s own top-of-the-line, custom-built, mobile workshop featuring a variety of skilled trades including welding, truck driving, heavy equipment operator, diesel mechanic technician, electrical lineman, and more. The Be Pro Be Proud Mobile Virtual Workshop gives students of all ages an immersive, hands-on and virtual reality experience with some of the state’s most in-demand skilled professions. The community is invited to experience spectacular simulators, while also learning more about the education and certifications, and what can be expected once a job is secured in those fields.
In addition to the simulators, the community will be able to meet ready-to-hire employers during the Job Fair portion of the event.
“We are very proud to be hosting this workforce development event with SC Works and bringing the Be Pro Be Proud Mobile Workshop to our campuses,” said Julie Golden, HGTC Training and Development Director for Workforce Development and Continuing Education. “The initiative strives to bring attention to younger populations, so they know there are viable, well-paying, in-demand jobs outside of the more expensive traditional college track. Those attending can also meet local employers participating in the Job Fair.”
Attendees will receive HGTC bags with college training class information and participating employer handouts.
“The best time to get started on your future is right now,” continued President Fore. “If you've got the talent and the ambition, HGTC is working with South Carolina’s top employers especially for you.”

The idea for this mobile workshop comes from the state of Arkansas where Be Pro Be Proud was created in 2016. South Carolina became the first state to partner with Arkansas to launch a mobile workshop and workforce development project like this.
