HGTC Hosts Open House and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for
Turf Care & Demonstration Center
Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) hosted an Open House and Ribbon Cutting
Ceremony for the new HGTC Turf Care & Demonstration Center on Monday, November 2 at
3:00 p.m.
Construction of the new Turf Care and Demonstration Center began in June 2020 on 27,500 square ft. located off of Technology and Victory Drive on the Conway campus. The center was uniquely designed for the Golf and Sports Turf Management program by local Myrtle Beach Golf Course Architect, Craig Schreiner.
“The new Turf Care and Demonstration Center is providing applications based learning and student, community, and industry engagement,” said Charles Granger, HGTC Professor and Chair of Golf & Sports Turf Management.
The center features:
- Par 3 hole with TifEagle putting surface
- Bentgrass and bermudagrass demonstration green
- Seven (7) types of lawn grasses for homeowners and lawn care professionals to evaluate
- One (1) bunker
- Zoysia tee
- Toro Irrigation system designed to maximize efficiency while reducing the need to irrigate
The system is also designed for golf, commercial, and residential situations respectively. The drainage system keeps all water on the HGTC campus.
“The center allows students the ability to learn in a hands on environment and study real-time, real-world agronomic challenges and practices,” continued Granger.
The Turf Care and Demonstration Center was completed and ready for students and the community in August.
The HGTC Turf Bowl Team named the “Fighting Mole Crickets” were champions of the 2019 Carolinas Turf Bowl Championship at the Carolinas Golf Course Superintendents Association (CGCSA) Conference and Show. The team also represented the College on the national level. Professors Charles Granger, George McCauley and Ashley Wilkinson prepared the “Fighting Mole Crickets” team to place 11th out of 53 teams and the first place two-year school in the competition.
