HGTC Announces Construction on Grand Strand Campus
Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) is excited to inform the entire community and especially those living in the Market Common area that construction is underway on the Grand Strand Campus. The Campus located in the heart of Myrtle Beach at 743 Hemlock Avenue is undergoing a major transformation and modernization of the facilities this year.
The project will consist of renovating three academic and administrative buildings, enhancing the existing storm water drainage systems, and modernizing the telecommunications infrastructure. The Campus transformation will also include significant renovations to the existing landscaping and overall pedestrian/vehicular flow infrastructures.
Renovations to the exterior of Buildings 100, 200, and 300 have already begun. HGTC is also renovating the sidewalks, curbing, and overall landscaping throughout the Campus. This work should largely be completed by fall 2021.
Extensive planning has been ongoing and thoroughly evaluated for the last two to three years in preparation for this monumental project. The budget is approximately $8.4 million with funding received through the years from the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base Redevelopment Authority, Penny Sales Tax, College Plant Funds, and the Horry County Transportation Committee.
The Grand Strand Campus on the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base is HGTC's largest campus covering nearly 72 acres with five buildings, including the 50,000-square-foot Dr. Robert E. Speir, Jr. Healthcare Education Center and the 24,000-square-foot Charles F. Freeman Community Dental Clinic. The Grand Strand Campus is the headquarters for the College's Continuing Education and Workforce Development Division and also home of the famous International Culinary Institute of Myrtle Beach.
