HGTC Culinary School Hosting Food Fight Against Cancer Fundraiser
Dinner to feature five-course meal, raise funds for local cancer foundation
A food fight is brewing at the International Culinary Institute of Myrtle Beach, as chefs and students are planning a dinner fundraiser to help raise awareness of testicular cancer in young adult men.
The event will be held Friday, March 15 at 6:00 p.m. in the Fowler Dining Room and will include a five-course meal incorporating ingredients with known cancer-fighting and cancer-preventing properties. The food for the event is being provided at no cost to the school by sponsors A&A Produce, US Foods, and Wicked Inlet Seafood. Tickets are $65 and all proceeds will benefit Comfort Cancer Foundation, a local non-profit dedicated to alleviating the financial burden of cancer patients seeking treatment.
Chef instructor Humberto Guardiola was inspired to organize the fundraiser when one of his students, Trevor Sievers, was diagnosed with testicular cancer this year.
“It’s hard to watch someone so young go through something like this,” Guardiola said. “I wanted to do what I could to raise awareness of this type of cancer and help raise funds for a local nonprofit organization that helps people like Trevor.”
According to the American Cancer Society, the average age at time of diagnosis is 33, and the incidence rate of testicular cancer has been increasing in the US for decades.
