HGTC Engineering Students Place First in ASCE Carolinas Competition
HGTC recognized over senior colleges
HGTC students Dustin Ramage and James Henderson, first place winners of the ASCE Carolinas cornhole competition.
Students from Horry-Georgetown Technical College’s (HGTC) civil engineering technology and construction management technology programs competed at the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Carolinas Conference held April 4 – 6, 2019, at North Carolina State University, and two students won first place in the concrete cornhole event. The HGTC cornhole team made up of students Dustin Ramage and James Henderson defeated Georgia Tech, the Citadel, and the University of Georgia to win first place.
HGTC was the only two-year technical college represented at the competition.
The team also received an honorable mention in the column design competition and participated in the surveying, quiz bowl, and transportation challenges. Clemson University, University of South Carolina, Duke University, North Carolina State, North Carolina A & T State University, and UNC Charlotte were among the other schools competing.
“I am tremendously proud of this team’s ingenuity, motivation, and perseverance,” said engineering professor David Lewis. “This year we saw a record level of student participation and we focused on gaining experience in new events and competing strongly. It was a pleasure working with this group and see new relationships develop as the ASCE team strengthened in technical ability as well as team work.”
HGTC’s civil engineering technology program and construction management technology program are associate in science degrees, and credits transfer to four-year colleges.
