HGTC Dean Participates in CCU’s Guest Coaches Weekend
Candace Howell gets a front row look at CCU football
(CONWAY, SC) Oct 22, 2018 - Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) dean & associate vice president for academic affairs Candace Howell recently participated in Coastal Carolina University’s (CCU) Football Team Guest Coaches weekend. Howell teaches a communications course at CCU and was invited to participate by running back Marcus Outlow, one of her former students.
Walter Goffigan, the event organizer and assistant director for student-athlete enrichment, says the experience is a great way for students to develop a mentor relationship and for their instructors to learn more about the life and needs of a student-athlete. As part of the event, guest coaches had the opportunity to meet with head coach Joe Moglia, attend a pre-practice meeting to give a few remarks about their students, and enjoy a pre-game meal with the players. Guest coaches then enjoyed the game with their families.
Outlow graduated from CCU in the spring of 2018 with a degree in communications and is now pursuing his master’s degree in instructional technology, with the goal of becoming a teacher.
“Professor Howell has taught me so much in so little time,” Outlow said. “She taught me how to chase my dreams no matter what and to do it while having fun. She’s also become a mentor of mine and has been there for me when I needed her.”
“The weekend was so much fun. Professor Howell got to experience the preparation and focus of a CCU football player. When I was asked to choose a guest coach, it was no doubt it was going to be her. I’m appreciative and thankful for everything she has done for me.”
Howell has benefited from the mentorship experience as much as her student.
“It was such an honor to be invited to participate as a guest coach at CCU and represent Marcus,” said Howell. “He is a natural leader in the classroom and an all-around impressive young man. I think I’ve learned more from him than he’s learned from me.”
