HGTC Engineering Students Place First in ASCE Carolinas Competition
HGTC recognized over senior colleges.
(CONWAY) Apr. 16, 2018 -- Students from Horry-Georgetown Technical College’s (HGTC) civil engineering technology program won first place in the freshmore challenge (tower building) last weekend at the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Carolinas Conference at Duke University. HGTC was the only two-year technical college represented at the competition.
The team also competed in the surveying, steel bridge, environmental, and concrete cornhole challenges. Clemson University, University of South Carolina, The Citadel, Duke University, North Carolina State, UNC Charlotte and Georgia Tech were among the other schools competing.

“The HGTC team was amazing to watch compete in this year’s ASCE Carolinas Conference,” said engineering department chair David Lewis. “Their team work, ingenuity, motivation, and perseverance were really impressive. For example, the steel bridge team stayed up all night the night before the competition to make last minute revisions to their bridge just in time for the competition at 8:00 am. We were a fraction of an inch away from making 3rd place at this nationally recognized event.”
HGTC’s civil engineering technology program is an associate in science degree, and credits transfer to four-year colleges.
