HGTC Annual Addiction and Recovery Series Lineup Announced
Popular Series to feature actress Mackenzie Phillips
Conway – Horry-Georgetown Technical College’s 11th Annual Addiction and Recovery Series will kick off on Thursday, February 22, and will feature actress Mackenzie Phillips.
Ms. Phillips will offer two presentations for members of the public - one at 10:00 a.m. and one at 7:00 p.m. Both presentations will be held in the Burroughs & Chapin Auditorium on HGTC’s Conway Campus, and a free dinner will be provided in Café 1100 at 6:00 p.m.
Phillips’ event will be followed by three consecutive Thursdays of featured speakers and community panels. All events are free and open to the public and will take place in the Burroughs & Chapin Auditorium on HGTC’s Conway Campus.
The series is presented by Horry-Georgetown Technical College and sponsored by Grand Strand Health, Faces and Voices of Recovery Grand Strand, Lighthouse Behavioral Health Hospital, and Shoreline Behavioral Health Services.

Speaker: Mackenzie Phillips
Laura Mackenzie Phillips is an American actress and author best known for her roles in American Graffiti and as a rebellious teenager Julie Mora Cooper Horvath on the sitcom One Day at a Time. Having struggled with drug and alcohol abuse for over a decade, Phillips has utilized her platform as a public figure to help educate people about addiction and to combat social stigmas. Her 2009 memoir, High on Arrival, detailed her battle with substance abuse and family trauma throughout her life, and her subsequent journey to mental and physical wellness.
Turning her life around to find that her passion is helping others to do the same, Phillips became a primary substance use counselor in 2013 and began working in the treatment field. Phillips currently works as a substance use disorder counselor at Breathe Life Healing Centers in West Hollywood, CA.

A panel of Horry-Georgetown Technical College students, faculty, and staff who are in recovery from various addictions will speak on what it was like, what happened, and reveal what they do on a daily basis to maintain their recovery.

Speaker: Kathleen T. Brady, MD, PhD, Vice President for Research, Medical University of South Carolina; Associate Provost, Clinical and Translational Science; Director, South Carolina Clinical and Translational Research Institute (SCTR)
Dr. Brady is an experienced clinical and translational researcher and has been conducting scientific investigations and clinical work in the field of addictions and psychiatric disorders for over 30 years. Her research focuses on pharmacotherapy of substance use disorders, comorbidity of psychiatric disorders and addictions (e.g., posttraumatic stress disorder and bipolar disorder), gender differences and women’s issues in addictions, and the neurobiologic connections between stress and addictions. She has been the Co- Director of MUSC’s NIH- funded post-doctoral fellowship program focused on translational research training in addictions for 15 years.

Faces and Voices of Recovery - Grand Strand will present Cory Reich, Ph.D., of The Institute for Addiction Study, Salt Lake City, Utah, who will speak on his new movie, Spirituality & Meaning, which will provide guidance in discovering your personal spirituality and meaning. The movie will be available for purchase on all four nights of the series.
