Academy Award-Winning Actor Lou Gossett to Lecture HGTC
Conway, SC — Lou Gossett, Jr., an academy award-winning actor from his work in An Officer and a Gentleman and recognized with a Golden Globe in The Josephine Baker Story, will speak in February during the 2016 Addiction and Recovery Lecture Series at Horry-Georgetown Technical College. Gossett will keynote the event at 7 p.m., Thurs., Feb. 25, in the Burroughs and Chapin Auditorium on the HGTC Conway Campus. A dinner open to the public in the adjacent Café 1100 precedes the lecture, starting at 6 p.m.
Prof. Casey King, founder of the successful ninth-year Addiction and Recovery Series, said, “Inviting famous speakers who have overcome addiction attracts many people to the college campus and provides a starting point for many who dream of fighting alcohol and drug addiction but don’t have the right support to do so. This series provides a solid foundation for their success.”
Other events in the series include Dr. Kevin McCauley, a national specialist in addiction therapy. Dr. McCauley will present at 7 p.m., Thurs., Mar. 3, on concepts and practices in addiction recovery management. Prof. King said this lecture is especially helpful to therapists, counselors and treatment program administrators. Topics of this presentation will include drug testing recovery coaches, recovery residences, support groups and addiction medicine specialists.
Two additional sessions will follow on Thurs., Mar. 10, with a panel of HGTC students, faculty and staff who are in recovery from addiction, and on Thurs., Mar. 17, with a special showing of Dr. McCauley’s presentation, “Memo to Self: Protecting Sobriety with the Science of Safety,” followed by a discussion.
All lectures will start at 7 p.m. in the Burroughs and Chapin Auditorium, and will be preceded by dinner at 6 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.
