International exposure comes to golf and sports turf students
Sixteen students from the HGTC Golf and Sports Turf program recently served as volunteers for The Players Championship near Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. They joined representatives from many nations, including Scotland, Malaysia, Chile and Argentina, among others. They unexpectedly found themselves featured on live TV as The Golf Channel covered the "Pink Out" on Mother's Day, when they helped remove all flowers on Holes 17 and 18 and installed pink varieties to honor all mothers, and especially those who suffer from cancer.
During the week, two HGTC students found jobs through connections made there and others were invited to help with major tournaments, including the upcoming U.S. Open. Prof. Richard McGuinnes said golf pros from prestigious courses said they want to hire more HGTC graduates. "I believe these opportunities will prove to be among the ways we expand our brand and continue to keep the college among the most popular turf programs in the country," he said.
