Largest graduation class in history at HGTC
About 1,270 graduates from HGTC will enter the local workforce or transfer to senior colleges to earn bachelor degrees. Of those, 570 marched in commencement exercises on May 13, at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. This included 42 HVAC graduates and first two graduates in the associate degree aviation maintenance program with PIA.
During ceremonies, President Neyle Wilson presented two Patron Emeritus Awards, one to Mrs. Joan Grimmett, retiring principal of the HCS Early College High School and another to Dr. Thomas W. Kelly, Jr., an adjunct professor in dental science. The Patron Emeritus is the highest award HGTC gives for community service.
Preliminary figures project that HGTC summer enrollment will be up by double digits, as many transient students from other colleges have discovered the value of online and on campus classes while on summer break or at work near Myrtle Beach.
