National Big Turf Win for HGTC
Golf and Sports Turf Management technology students from Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) won first place among two-year colleges in the national sports turf competition in Daytona Beach, FL, last week. HGTC team members included Kyle Hamilton, Kevin Nason, Jay Richardson and Bradley Stokes, who call themselves the “Mole Crickets.” They competed against 40 other universities and technical colleges in the Sports Turf Managers Association annual competition.
As all schools take the same test, HGTC would have finished fourth nationally if they had been included in the university category. A mere 1.5 points separated HGTC from finishing second if they had been allowed to compete in the university challenge. Winning four-year teams were Maryland, Penn State and Virginia Tech. Colleges scoring lower than HGTC included Texas A&M, Ohio State and Rutgers.
