Forestry Management Professor Receives Honorary Degree(CONWAY, SC) July 3, 2018 - Deanna Ruth, a professor of forestry management at Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC), was awarded the South Carolina Future Farmers of America’s Honorary State Degree at SCFFA’s state convention in Clemson last month. Ruth was selected for this honor because of her service in leading the efforts of the SCFFA Wildlife Competition for the past few years.

These efforts involve acquiring grants, coordinating with the SCFFA staff, planning and executing a tour for out-of-town participants the day before the event, managing HGTC student volunteers, producing t-shirts for the event, contracting lunch, and preparing and executing the competition.

“Professor Ruth is respected as a leader by the over 150 high school students and teachers who visit our Georgetown campus each year, over 15 HGTC forestry student volunteers, and countless other faculty and guests,” said HGTC forestry and wildlife program chair Jim Westerhold. “She is very deserving of this honor and we are extremely proud of her.”

Ruth holds two bachelor’s degrees, one in wildlife science and one in forestry, as well as a masters in aquaculture, fisheries and wildlife. She worked for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources for 14 years before joining HGTC in 2013. In her spare time, she enjoys riding horses and spending time with her children.
